For Matt Sherman, the 2024/25 VIC Regional Series is not just about chasing personal bests or podium spots.
It’s about embracing the spirit of regional triathlon racing, supporting local events, and fuelling the growth of the sport he loves.
Matt, a dedicated athlete from Echuca, is leading the men’s 30-39 age category after two races in the series, and his commitment to completing all six regional events this season is an inspiring story of endurance, community, and passion for the sport.
“It started out as a nice ambition to travel around and see some new courses,” Sherman said.
“My wife and I have a 16 month old, so we thought it’d be a nice idea to travel to places like Albury, Barwon Heads, Bendigo and Marlo to make mini-holidays out of sporting events.
“But I didn’t expect to be doing this well so it sounds like now I have to commit and do the rest.”
One of the standout races on Matt’s calendar this year is the return of Shepparton’s legendary HEXMAN Triathlon.
Set for Sunday 2 February, this race marks the long-awaited return of an iconic event that has been absent for several years.
Known for its challenging yet achievable format, the HEXMAN Triathlon consists of a 650m swim, 30km bike and 7km run.
This offers athletes the chance to compete in a race that’s a step up from a sprint distance but not as daunting as a Standard or even 70.3 Ironman distance.
“I have never done a HEXMAN distance event, but am really looking forward to it,” he said.
“I love longer distance races, so I think this will be a fantastic opportunity to get some more time on the bike and run course.
“Shepparton has such a great course on offer, so I am looking forward to competing with some locals as well as those travelling.
“HEXMAN is a unique distance between a Sprint and Olympic, so it’s well suited to those looking to step up to a longer format in the future.
“It hasn’t been around for a few years, so I’m sure it will bring a few back to the area who experienced it previously.
“The Course at Shepparton is relatively flat and fast so it’s great for those chasing faster splits whilst testing a slighter longer endurance.”
To anyone still on the fence about whether to enter into the HEXMAN on February 2, Matt Sherman says that immersing yourself in the supportive environment of triathlon and the events is something you won’t regret.
“Don’t doubt yourself, just enter, you won’t regret it,” he said.
“The course, atmosphere and distances on offer will be a fantastic opportunity to test your endurance and see the beautiful area that Shepparton has to offer.
“I love the supportive atmosphere of triathlon and the village that comes together at each event, not just attendees, but the volunteers and crowd.
“Each event is so positive and keeps you coming back.”
As a member of the Echuca Moama Triathlon Club, Matt’s involvement in the VIC Regional Series is more than just a personal goal – it’s about supporting regional races and helping to foster a thriving multisport community in Victoria.
The series spans six races across regional Victoria, each offering a unique challenge, from smaller towns to larger regional hubs, and provides athletes of all levels a chance to race on different courses and terrains.
The flexibility of the series allows athletes to pace themselves while still competing against a strong field of talented regional athletes.
Local athletes, whether seasoned triathletes or newcomers to the sport, are urged to sign up and experience the thrill of racing in Shepparton.
The HEXMAN Triathlon is not just another race on the calendar; it’s a chance to be part of something special, to challenge yourself, and to support the growth of multisport in regional Victoria.
Whether you’re aiming to race at the front of the pack or simply want to enjoy a day out with friends, the HEXMAN Triathlon and the VIC Regional Series offer something for everyone.
So, if you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time—don’t miss out on the chance to race in one of the most iconic events in regional Victoria!
