Penelope Nevill aiming to defend world title in Townsville

Victorian athlete Penelope Nevill will return to the international circuit when she takes to the course at the World Triathlon Multisport World Championships in Townsville.

The 12-day event will see 19 World Championship races take place from August 15-25, 2024 in Queensland’s north.

Having claimed gold at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championship in the 35-39 female age group category, Nevill will aim to defend her title when she contests the same event this August.

“My goals for the Multisport World Championships are to thoroughly enjoy my races while also aiming to be competitive and potentially defend my title,” said Nevill.

“I am eagerly looking forward to soaking up the warmth and sunshine of Townsville, which promises to provide a delightful backdrop for the upcoming event, and am excited to embrace the challenge posed by the strong competition that will be present at the championships.

“The combination of a vibrant environment and competitive spirit is sure to make this experience memorable and motivating,” she said.

Having taken up Triathlon in 2016, Nevill could not be a bigger advocate for the sport.

“Triathlon is more than just a sport to me; it’s a lifestyle that promotes fitness and health,” she said.

“It offers a great chance to train alongside individuals who share similar goals and provides opportunities to explore different parts of the world.”

Now eight years into her journey, Nevill is no stranger to elite competition, having competed on the Australian Age Group Team on three separate occasions.

“In 2018 I earned the opportunity to compete in my first World Championships held at the Gold Coast. Despite not coming away with a medal, it was a fantastic experience that gave me my first taste of World Championship racing,” she said.

“My first medal came a year later at the 2019 World Championships in Lausanne, an event which is still so memorable for me.

“Last year, I ventured into sprint duathlons and proudly secured my first world championship in Ibiza.

“I’ve been working hard ahead of this year’s event and am looking forward to hopefully putting my best foot forward,” she said.
