Sunshine Coast crowns Aquathlon and All Schools champions

17 Oct 2024

A beautiful, sunny weekend on the Sunshine Coast saw multiple champions crowned across the Queensland Aquathlon State Championships and All Schools Triathlon and Aquathlon.

Taking place at Kawana Lake from October 12-13, both events attracted participants from numerous clubs and schools from around Queensland, with participants turning enjoyment into fuel when they took to the course.

A great event held over two days, the All Schools Triathlon and Aquathlon saw more than 750 kids tackle the Kawana course in south-east Queensland with 18 of those competing in the Multiclass event, tripling the number from last year.

On Saturday, 350 primary-aged students gave it their all in the aquathlon, while Sunday saw over 400 high school students compete in the triathlon. Genesis Christian College from Brisbane made history by being crowned the first-ever Aquathlon Champion School and also clinching the Triathlon Champion School title on Sunday.

“When we heard it announced that we had been named Champion School we thought ‘wow, we did it’ cause we knew there were some other great schools in the mix as well,” said Coach Stephen Moss.

“Everyone was really excited – it does mean a lot to the group as well as to everyone individually – to be rewarded for what we did.

“Since coming on board, I’ve been focusing on creating a sustainable program as a few years ago the program at the school was shut down. So to see the program and our athletes achieve something like this is fantastic.”

In addition to the All Schools Aquathlon and Triathlon, Saturday also saw Queenslanders come together for the Queensland Aquathlon State Championships, the third state Championship event for the season.

A huge effort on the course saw Viv Broadbent finish in a time of 32:42 to be awarded overall female winner, while Kye Wylde raised the trophy in the men’s.
