Australia’s next generation of triathlon talent is set to kick off their 2026 international campaign this weekend, lining up at the World Triathlon Cup in Chengdu, China.
Emerging stars Brayden Mercer, Charlotte Derbyshire and Tara Sosinski will be among an Australian team competing in the fast-paced sprint distance triathlons followed by the dynamic Mixed Team Relay, a fan-favourite format that will also feature at the Olympic Games, making it a crucial early-season test on the world stage.
For Brayden Mercer, the race marks an important return to international competition and a chance to build momentum in the opening hit-out of his season. Known for his aggressive racing style and strength across all three disciplines, Mercer will be looking to make an early statement against a deep international field.
“I’m really excited about racing in Chengdu, and also with the possibility of racing in the mixed team relay,” Mercer said.
“It’s my first race before my big block overseas, so I’m really looking forward to it.
“I raced in the World Cup there last year at Olympic distance, didn’t have the result I wanted, so I’m really keen to get back there and have a great race this time around.
“I’m looking to start the European campaign with a good race.”
Charlotte Derbyshire also begins her 2026 campaign in Chengdu, bringing consistency and composure to the Australian lineup. With a strong all-round skillset and growing confidence at World Cup level, Derbyshire will be aiming to convert her preparation into a breakthrough performance.
“I”m really excited by the mixed team relay,” Derbyshire said.
“It’s the day after the individual racing, and a great opportunity to really put yourself out there as a good mixed team relay athlete.
“I’ve done Chengdu before, all races in China are really professional.”
Tara Sosinski adds further depth to the Australian contingent, stepping onto the start line for her first race of the season with a focus on gaining valuable international experience. A developing athlete with plenty of upside, Chengdu presents an opportunity to test herself against some of the sport’s emerging and established names.
With the inclusion of the Mixed Team Relay, Australia will also have the chance to showcase its depth and versatility, as athletes combine in teams to tackle a rapid-fire, high-pressure format that rewards speed, strategy and seamless transitions.
The Australian mixed team will be decided after individual races are completed on Saturday evening.
As the season opener, Chengdu provides an early benchmark for Australia’s rising stars and a chance to lay down a marker ahead of a big year of international racing.
