Australian Age Group Team dominate 2024 with record 89 world titles

From Townsville to Torremolinos, the Australian Age Group Team shattered records and set a new standard in 2024, securing an unprecedented 89 world titles and 268 total medals.

The team showed their talents across three major World Championship events: the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Townsville – Australia’s first-ever Multisport Championships and the first Age Group Championships in the country since 2018; the World Triathlon Long Distance Duathlon Championships in Zofingen; and the World Triathlon Age Group Championships in Torremolinos.

AusTriathlon Age Group Team Manager Alex Fehon reflected on an outstanding year, proudly celebrating the team’s success.

“To secure 89 world titles is an incredible achievement, and I couldn’t be prouder of the entire team,” Fehon said.

“Our athletes truly punched above their weight, competing against some of the best in the world. To finish the year with 268 medals speaks volumes about their commitment to representing Australia at the highest level.

“We’re incredibly excited for 2025, with the Multisport World Championships in Pontevedra, the Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen, and the Triathlon World Championships in Wollongong, on the horizon.

“I’m confident with the talent and drive in our team, we’ll continue to break new ground and raise the bar even higher.

“Representing Australia on home soil in Wollongong will be especially exciting, and we can’t wait to see our athletes rise to the challenge on the world stage again.”

 

World Triathlon Age Group Multisport Championships Townsville

The 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships marked Townsville’s largest sporting event to date, so it was only fitting the Australian Age Group Team sent its largest-ever contingent to compete.

With over 1,000 team members representing Australia, the 12-day event proved to be an unforgettable experience, showcasing incredible performances across six action-packed events: Sprint Duathlon, Standard Duathlon, Cross Triathlon, Cross Duathlon, Aquathlon, Long Distance Aquabike, and Long Distance Triathlon.

The team’s efforts were nothing short of outstanding, with a total of 257 podium finishes netting the green and gold 84 gold medals, 86 silver medals, and 87 bronze medals.

Kevin Fergusson emerged as the star of the event, claiming five world titles and winning a medal in all six events he entered. He earned World Triathlon Multisport Legend status alongside Phillip Hermitage, Geoff Breese, Don McArthur, Sam Cooke, David Comiskey, Darren Cronshaw, James Leonard, Matthew Pooley, and Damian Persen.

Warwick Sinclair, Tom Jenkins, Lesley West, Demi Caldwell and James Thorp all walked away from Townsville with two world title wins, showing their talent across multiple events.

The 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville were supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.

 

World Triathlon Age Group Championships Torremolinos

Australia continued its strong performance at the World Triathlon Age Group Championships, held in Torremolinos, Spain.

The team, made up of 112 athletes, competed fiercely from October 17-20, across Sprint, Standard, Aquabike, and Mixed Relay events, as part of the World Triathlon Championship Finals.

Punching well above their weight, Australia secured an impressive eleven medals, including five world championships, three silver medals, and three bronze medals to finish sixth on World Triathlon’s medal tally.

Christian Seymour was first Australian to claim a world title in Torremolinos, capturing gold in the 60-65 age group of the Sprint event.

The Standard Championship emerged as Australia’s standout event, with the team crowning three world champions. Bailey Tuddenham, Lauren Sprague, and Alana Hewish all captured world titles in their respective age groups.

In the Aquabike Championships, Ken Murley added a final world title to the Australia’s 2024 tally, rounding off an unforgettable year for the Age Group Team.
