Australians Chase World Series and Olympic Relay Momentum in Quiberon

17 Jun 2026

Australia’s triathletes will take on the world’s best this weekend at the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series in Quiberon, France, with valuable world ranking points and crucial Mixed Team Relay experience on the line as the road to Los Angeles 2028 continues.

Luke Schofield and Callum McClusky will represent in the elite men’s competition, while Tara Sosinski and Sophie Malowiecki will contest the elite women’s event.

For Gold Coast’s Sosinski, who is targeting the U23 World Championships at the end of the year, the event shapes as a chance to step up to the senior ranks and emerge on the global stage.

“I think especially this year, I want to be a player in the race,” Sosinski said.

“I want to lean on my strengths and really showcase that in a race format and make some moves.

“I think you learn so much just by being around those athletes, especially tactically. They’ve raced in so many different situations and environments.

“I want to show that I can compete at that level.”

Watching athletes like Australia’s world champion Matt Hauser rise through the same pathways has only strengthened her belief that Australian athletes can compete with the very best.

“When you see someone come through the same system and then win a world title, it definitely shows what’s possible,” she said.

Held on the Brittany coastline, WTCS Quiberon is one of the newest additions to the World Triathlon Championship Series calendar and will feature both elite sprint-distance racing and the Mixed Team Relay – one of the most exciting formats in Olympic sport.

The event also forms part of the qualification pathway towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The individual sprint races will be held on Saturday, with Australia’s Mixed Team Relay team will be finalised following the individual events.

Quiberon’s coastal course is expected to provide a challenging test, featuring Atlantic Ocean swimming, technical cycling and fast-paced running through the heart of the French peninsula.

World Champion Matt Hauser has chosen to skip Quiberon to focus on getting an altitude training block done ahead of Hamburg and London races.

With WTCS points, Olympic qualification implications and national pride at stake, the Australian team will be aiming to make its mark against the world’s leading triathlon nations in one of the most important events of the 2026 season.
