The nation’s next generation of triathlon talent will be on show at Runaway Bay this weekend, with the 2023 Australian Junior & Youth Super Sprint Championship hitting the track at the Gold Coast Performance Centre.
The Championships take place as part of the Super Sprint Weekend which see athletes compete in a range of multisport events across four days.
The Super Sprint Weekend is notorious for helping launching the careers of many future triathlon stars.
Olympians Ash Gentle, Matt Hauser, Jaz Hedgeland, Jake Birtwhistle and Emma Jackson all once graced the top of the podium at the Australian Junior & Youth Super Sprint Championships.
This weekend, the Gold Coast Performance Centre sets the stage for the nation’s next generation of talent to follow in their footsteps.
Queensland’s Aspen Anderson emerges as a contender in the Junior Women category, already holding the title of the 2021 Champion and boasting dual gold medals from this years Commonwealth Youth Games.
Joining her on the starting line is fellow Queenslander Hannah Pollock, also an Australian representative at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
New South Wales’ Alexandra Field brings an extra layer of international experience to the mix, having participated in this year’s Junior World Championship held in Hamburg, Germany.
In the Junior Men’s division, Tasmania’s Jack Latham takes center stage with his achievements this season, clinching both gold and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Victoria’s Oscar Wootton is also an Australian Commonwealth Youth Games representative, contributing to the high-caliber lineup.
The defending Junior Men’s Super Sprint Champion, Mitchell Blackbourn from New South Wales, adds more experience to the field, having also represented Australia at this year’s Junior World Championship.
Athletes will accumulate points through various events, such as le mans, aquathlon, mixed relay, with points assigned based on overall time.
Sunday’s Super Sprint Final involves seeding from previous events, with overall champions determined by the first finishers in respective age categories.
