Australia’s Ashleigh Gentle faces off against American Taylor Knibb in a battle for the inaugural T100 Triathlon World Championship title at the Championship Final in Dubai.
Three-time T100 winner Knibb, who claimed victories in San Francisco, Ibiza, and Las Vegas, currently leads the series standings. A win or second-place finish in Dubai would secure her the title of the inaugural T100 Triathlon World Champion.
However, if two-time T100 winner Gentle – victorious in London and Singapore – clinches first place in Dubai while her American rival finishes third or lower, the T100 women’s title will be heading to Australia.
The winner of the T100 series will not only be crowned World Champion by World Triathlon, the sport’s international governing body, but will also take home a substantial $210,000 USD for topping the standings.
Also in the mix are Great Britain’s India Lee, Kat Matthews, Lucy Byram, and Lucy Charles-Barclay; Switzerland’s Imogen Simmonds; Germany’s Laura Philipp; and Canada’s Paula Findlay – all contenders for a spot on the T100 series podium.
With increased points up for grabs in the final (55 points for the win, compared to the usual 35, down to 4 points for 20th place instead of the usual 1), the stakes are higher than ever.
There will also be more than 20 athletes on the start line for the first time this year, thanks to five wildcard athletes who have qualified during the season, including fellow Australian Grace Thek.
Gentle will be joined by fellow Australian Grace Thek in the women’s race, while Aaron Royle and Max Neumann will fly the flag for Australia in the men’s event.
