St Kilda hosted a perfect spring day for the VIC Long Course State Championships at the Ironman 70.3, a race like no other in the Oceania circuit.
An event that is great for both newcomers and more seasoned triathletes, the Ironman 70.3 Melbourne saw a total of 1,500 event finishers complete the scenic course.
Newly appointed President of Triathlon Victoria Damian Walsh not only oversaw the event, but took part in the challenge too, only a week after taking on the New York Marathon.
“This year’s event was absolutely fantastic,” Walsh said.
“Melbourne turned on the perfect spring day, with calm water, little wind and a bit of sunshine, which made for an enjoyable and fast race.
“The weather showed off the course to its fullest, with great views of the Bay, City and the stunning Beach Road.
“Having done the New York Marathon less than a week before, the legs were a bit heavy, but I was keen to do this race, so I gave it a shot.
“The swim and bike went well, as did the first half of the run, but the fatigue kicked in in the 2nd half of the run, but managed to bring it home.”
For Damian Walsh, it was both an honour to race alongside the passionate Victorian triathlon community and then present the medals to those that placed on the podium.
“I love the Victorian triathlon community, and am inspired by the buzz of these races,” he said.
“For me it was an honour to race with all the other Age Group athletes and be part of the community and experience what all members experience.
“Then it was a quick change of clothes and a privilege to then present the Victorian Long Course State Championship medals to the podium winners.”
Earning himself a qualification for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Marbella, Spain next year, was an unexpected but added bonus for Damian.
