Australian athletes left nothing to chance on the course today at the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville, diving into the Aquathlon and emerging victorious.

After what was an incredibly successful day, another 57 medals have been added to the overall Team Australia medal tally, with incredible efforts seeing 19 local athletes named World Champions.

An athlete in AusTriathlon’s Talent Transfer program, Claire Spicknall shone on the Aquathlon course, becoming World Champion in the Junior Female category as well as securing a prestigious Silver medal in the Elite Female division.

“We started with a 2.5km run and everyone went super hard off the gun, I think the pace of the first kilometre was about 3.13-3.15,” said Spicknall.

“The swim was really nice, it was perfect conditions with no wind, and we went into the second run very much spread out.

“The finish was electric, everyone was cheering on the side lines and it was a really good atmosphere,” she said.

Finishing just after Spicknall in a time of 33:13, Kiara Mooney secured Bronze in the Elite Women’s category and Silver in the Junior Female, whilst Luke Bate’s efforts in the Elite Men’s also earned him a Silver medal.

The impressive results continued in the Junior and U23 categories, with sisters Isla and Gwen Watson winning Gold and Bronze in the U23 Female and Junior Female categories respectively. Rohan Hickey finished strong to secure the bronze in the U23 Men’s category, while Juniors Joel Offord and Kyle Mason won Gold and Silver in that order.

John Domandl and Guide Luke Jones (PTVI Men) also put forward a stunning effort to win Gold and the World Champion title in a time of 57:45.

AusTriathlon Legend of the Sport, and someone who can usually be found behind the scenes as the founder of MultiSport Australia, Belinda Soszyn secured her fifth career world title after a fantastic race – 12 years on from her last world championships appearance where she also won Aquathlon gold.

“The finish line is beautiful and the weather today was spectacular,” said Soszyn.

“To come across that line is just the best feeling and to hear that you have won the gold medal is very satisfying, because I’ve been at this game for a very, very, very long time. How can you not enjoy being out here and doing this!

“Townsville has put on a great show, I’m really impressed with the way everything has gone and the people are so incredibly friendly, so it’s been great.

“As soon as I finished I was behind the scenes de-strapping timing chips. The work never finishes but that’s the beauty of it – you not only get to compete, but you also get to see how everyone else is going. I love this sport,” she said.

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.
