An incredible final day of racing at the World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville saw TeamAus make their mark on the local event, claiming numerous podiums across the Aquabike and Long Distance events.

While 33 podiums were secured in the Aquabike, another 39 were earned in the Long Distance event, making it the most successful day of competition for Aussies across the board with 72 TeamAus members featuring on the podium.

For Elite Men’s competitor Steve McKenna, winning a prestigious Silver medal at the 2024 World Triathlon Long Distance Championships Townsville is an achievement he will not forget anytime soon.

McKenna finished three minutes behind European champion and silver medallist from the World Long Distance Triathlon Championships in 2023, Antonio Benito Lopez (ESP).

“I think I paced it perfectly and gave the best I had, Lopez was just too good for me,” said McKenna.

“He was a really fair bike rider out there too and did a lot of work with me.

“I just didn’t want the second pack to catch up, so I was happy to do a bit more work. Going to the front a bit more ended up being beneficial because usually it’s a bit punchy for me with bigger bike riders and today I got to control a bit of it here and there.

McKenna dropped the hammer during the second half of the final bike lap and on the day after his birthday, he secured a memorable present to himself.

“I’m very happy. I took a bit too long in T2 but I wasn’t worried because I’ve done a lot of heat work and I just know that I was going to drink heaps on the run and pace myself well,” he said.

Across both the Elite Men’s and Women’s categories, our TeamAus athletes did us proud, securing another eight top 10 finishes.

In the Para triathlon long distance event, Australians Dean Cameron and guide Dareen Crowther took Gold in the PTVI category with compatriots John Domandl and guide Daniel Merange taking Silver.

Outstanding efforts on the course saw 25 Age Group Australian Age Group athletes crowned World Champions, securing a golden finish for the home team.

The 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville saw hundreds of Australians feature on the podium, and AusTriathlon would like to extend its sincerest congratulations to all those who took part.

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville has been supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.
