Luke Schofield and Aspen Anderson claimed the Australian Sprint Championship titles at the 2XU Triathlon Series in Elwood.
Schofield ran to victory in the men’s race, securing the national title ahead of Jack Caldwell in second, and twin brother Jayden Schofield in third.
“I’m pretty stoked,” Schofield said.
“It was a perfect race, the venue is brilliant. Sprint champ, that’s a pretty cool title to the name.
“The swim was a little bit choppy; it was a bit messy – there were a lot of people around us. But I came out of the water towards the front. The bike was pretty full on. Jayden and I played some sneaky tactics and did some attacks just to make it a little spicy.
“It came down to the run and Jack Caldwell put the pressure on, he was a gun on the first half of the run so full credit to him. He’s an up-and-coming junior that we should all look out for. I managed to sit on him and then take the win.”
On the women’s side, Anderson produced a standout performance to win the Australian title, crossing the line ahead of Zoe Clarke in second and Claire Spicknall in third.
“I’m really happy with that, I put a good race together today,” Anderson said.
“I swam really well, which I was really happy with because I’ve been really working on that, and got a good group of girls working on the bike, and just ran to my strengths – I’m just really happy.”
The Australian Junior Championships were also contested in Elwood, with the nation’s top rising stars racing alongside the elite fields.
Caldwell claimed the Australian Junior Championship title in the men’s race, with his New South Wales teammate, Wade Barr, securing the silver, and Victoria’s Oscar Wootton bagging bronze.
Anderson triumphed in the women’s race to capture her second consecutive Australian Junior title, while teammates Hannah Pollock and Gwen Watson took silver and bronze to complete an all-Queensland podium.
