In the world of triathlon, Jenny Alcorn is a guiding force, a mentor, and a living legend.
Now, the 64-year-old is now facing the toughest challenge of her life as she confronts a rare and aggressive brain tumour.
Diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM), a condition known for its grim survival rates, Alcorn is gearing up for a relentless fight against the disease.
Despite facing a formidable opponent in, she maintains an unwavering spirit.
“I’m in the fight of my life. I want to win and I will win,” Alcorn declared.
The journey into this health battle began four months ago when Alcorn started experiencing alarming symptoms, including dizziness and numbness on her left side.
Concerned, she underwent a series of tests that revealed the presence of a formidable foe within her brain.
Following surgery to remove as much of the tumour as possible, Alcorn is now preparing for rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, set to commence next week.
In light of her experience, Alcorn emphasised the importance of personal health check-ups and vigilance.
“This cancer does not discriminate,” she warned, urging others to seek medical attention for symptoms such as migraines, dizziness, or limb numbness.
For over 30 years, Alcorn has been the Head Coach at Surfers Paradise Triathlon, leaving an indelible mark on the triathlon community.
Her coaching legacy extends beyond numbers and statistics; she has been the guiding force behind athletes ranging from juniors to world elite competitors.
Notably, she mentored the likes of Emma Snowsill and Ashleigh Gentle, both of who have made their own impacts in the world of triathlon.
As an athlete Alcorn’s remarkable career has been punctuated by victories across various Age Group World Championships, showcasing her prowess in duathlon and cross triathlon.
It was in 2016 that she reached the pinnacle of her career, standing atop the podium as the IRONMAN World Champion in her age group at Kona.
In 2018, Alcorn had the honour of being the Flag Bearer for the Australia Team at the Age Group World Championships held on the Gold Coast, and in 2021, AusTriathlon officially recognised her as a Legend of the Sport.
