From hosting the 2025 World Champions last year, to the home of the Australian Championships Standard Distance this year, Wollongong is shaping up to be the place to be when it comes to triathlon. And for Martin (Marty) Jewell, he can’t wait to hit the course this weekend at the Wollongong Triathlon Festival.
“Wollongong is a standout event for me.’
“It’s my favourite course in NSW and a great opportunity to test myself against some of the best athletes in Australia. It’s been a focus race ever since competing at the World Championships there last year.”
With a hunger burning inside, it’s fair to say that Marty has his sights set on a top 10 finish in his age group.
“Execution. Putting all three disciplines together and performing above training benchmarks on the day.
A top 10 finish in my age group would be a strong result.”
This event is also another step in the right direction for Martin to continue to track his growth and development by competing against some of the best in Australia.
“It’s an opportunity to measure myself against the best athletes in the country on one of the best courses available. A chance to go all in and see where I stand.”
Marty doesn’t leave any stone unturned when it comes to his race analysis, often drilling down on his performance to see where potential improvements lie and how he can go one better at the next outing.
“It’s a sport where hard work shows. I’m also drawn to the data and performance side of it. It’s not just swim, ride, run it’s about execution across all three.”
And while the focus might be on the outcome come Saturday, it’s much deeper than that. Triathlon isn’t just about crossing the line; it’s about building community and pushing yourself every inch of the way.
“I love that triathlon rewards consistency and effort, what you put in is what you get out.”
“Most of all, it’s the community. From professionals to first-timers, everyone is supported, and every result matters.”
Although triathlon is based off individual performances and can seem like an individual sport, the true heartbeat comes from within the clubs with Marty sharing how Goulburn Triathlon Club has shaped his journey by creating an environment that thrives off friendship, camaraderie and teamwork.
“I joined Goulburn Triathlon Club after my first race in Wollongong in April 2023, which I completed to raise money for the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation after losing my uncle. We raised $11,300 in just two weeks.”
“The club may be small, but it consistently performs at a high level. The people and support within the club are what keep me involved.”
Wollongong is set to be a blockbuster race this weekend with plenty of athletes embarking on the start line to try and clinch Australian Championship status..
